Matthew 20:30-34

31 The crowd sternly ordered them to be quiet; but they shouted even more loudly, "Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!" (Matthew 20:31)

When we gather for worship, we do so mindful of our needs and the needs of others. We “pray for the church, the world, and all those in need” saying, “Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.” We pray for peace in the world, for the healing of creation, for those in positions of leadership, for those who are sick and dying, and for a multitude of needs and concerns of which we are aware.

But here’s the thing we don’t often consider: God already knows about these concerns. In the power of the Holy Spirit, God's mending the mess. It’s not as if we’re calling something new to God’s attention. Yes, we address these prayers to God and implore God’s mercy, but the prayers we offer should also send us into the world as the answer to prayer. Tomorrow, listen to the prayers we offer in worship and consider how those prayers will bear fruit in your life in the week ahead.

Matthew 20:30-34 NRSV
30 There were two blind men sitting by the roadside. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"
31 The crowd sternly ordered them to be quiet; but they shouted even more loudly, "Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!"
32 Jesus stood still and called them, saying, "What do you want me to do for you?"
33 They said to him, "Lord, let our eyes be opened."
34 Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him.
