Luke 16:19-31
He called out, 'Father
Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in
water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.' (Luke 16:24)
The really disturbing nature of indifference is that we know
of someone’s plight, but we just don’t care. When the tables are turned in
Jesus’ parable and the rich man is the one crying out in desperate longing, we discover that knew Lazarus’ name! Unlike the religious professionals who side-stepped the poor guy lying half-dead in the ditch in Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan, the rich man actually knew who it was that lay at his gate hungry and covered with
sores. And yet, the rich man's well-insulated life did not leave room for
compassion.
Indifference sees Lazarus, raises a glass and proclaims:
“There but for the grace of God go I.” Every time this happens, the chasm
grows.
